Bigger Than That

bigger than

Dear Faith Family,

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?  Tell me, if you have understanding, Who determined its measurements – surely you know!  Or who stretched the line upon it?  On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?  Job 38:4-7

Some years ago I made acquaintance with an extension saw.  (Insert a Tim the Tool Man Taylor growl here.)  In the side yard of our home in Alabama there was a small limb extending from a pine tree overshadowing the roof of the house.  No problem.  I was holding an extension saw.  I got this.  Why are you laughing right now?

Well I commenced to cuttin.  (That’s how lumberjacks say cutting.)  And, did I say a small limb?!  I promise that the diameter of that limb increased proportionately with each descending inch!  By the time that limb made friends with my central air conditioning unit on the ground.  Well, let’s just say that the air conditioner lost.

I’m fascinated by the life of Job.  What a trooper!  But, like the rest of us, he had his limits.  Seems he reached his limit somewhere near the end of the book of Job.  (Make some time to read through Job 38-42.  Or, read through the whole book.) That’s where God got up close and personal.  Some might say that God got all up in Job’s grill.  Apparently, Job’s God wasn’t big enough.

God was bigger than Job knew.  When God “grew” (You know that He didn’t really grow, right?!), Job began to recognize his own smallness, (Job 40:4).  Learning to trust the Almighty begins with seeing that He is almighty!  Kept at a distance, God may appear small.  The closer you get, the bigger He is!

God is bigger than the sin that hounds you.  He is bigger than the financial pressures that you face.  He is bigger than your broken relationships.  He’s bigger than the confusion that clouds your thoughts.  He’s bigger than your prodigal.  He’s bigger than life itself.

Where, in your life, is your God “growing”?  Could it be that in the face of the sin that hounds you, the financial pressures, the broken relationships, the confusion, the prodigals, or even in the __________ (you fill in the blank), that God is showing you that He is Almighty?  That you can trust Him?  Get closer.  Pull up a chair and gaze at His portrait painted on the pages of the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments.

He’s bigger than that,
Pastor Karl
