Dead Ends

Devotional 12.28.22

Dear Faith Family,

Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt, (Exodus 3:10).

So, I’m a slow learner.  I get it.  May I make a suggestion?  If they put pictures of tools that you might need on a box containing a potential Christmas present, don’t buy it!

My sweet wife has tolerated a light fixture in the master bathroom for nearly 20 years.  I don’t understand the problem.  Rust is a nice, natural color.

Here’s the thing.  If you remove the old light fixture, you’ll probably discover an area that needs painting.  And the new light fixture comes complete with a guarantee that reads: “guaranteed not to be the same size as the light fixture being replaced.”  You guessed it.  Painting required.  Oh, and where the Romex wire protruded from the hole in the wall, there was another piece of Romex wire attached to nothing.  That’s right.  Nothing.  It just dead ended into wall.  Now that didn’t seem right.

What did I do?  I tried the tongue test.  Touch both the white and black wires to the tongue and see if anything happens.  When I woke up….  Just kidding.  (Do not do that!  They make testers for that.)  Those dead-end wires got me to thinking.  How many of life’s “wires” seem to end up nowhere.

Think about it.  Moses was raised under Pharoah’s roof.  Dead end.  He wanted to save his people when he saw the Egyptians abusing the Hebrew people.  That didn’t turn out to well.  Yup.  Dead end.  His attempt to rescue his people bought Moses a one-way ticket to the desert to tend sheep.  That lasted for years.  Obviously another, you guessed it, dead end.

But God met Moses out there in the desert!  You do remember the burning bush, right?  Seems that God had plans for those dead ends.  God picked up those dead-end wires and plugged Moses in.  Moses was no stranger to the life of Pharaoh.  He had been there before.  He loved his people, God’s people.  And I reckon that his sheep tending skills came in handy for herding Hebrews through the wilderness.  Those dead-ends proved rather productive don’t you think?

My point?  You may have some dead ends in your life.  You know, wires leading nowhere.  Circumstances that seemed rather pointless.  Jobs that seemed a waste of time.  Trials that don’t make sense.  If I were a betting man, I’d bet that God’s plugging those dead ends in somewhere.  He may let you see where.  He may not.  God has a unique way of connecting the wires of your life to accomplish His purposes.  Pray.  Ask God to plug in those dead ends.  And then ask Him for eyes to see how He is using your dead ends.

Getting plugged in,
Pastor Karl
