Gazing

Gazing

Dear Faith Family,

Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they existed and were created, Revelation 4:11.

There was a disturbance in the force.  It awakened me.  The movement ushered me out of the land of dreams and into the reality of the day.  The disturbance?  A cat named Lucy.  This time of year, she spends her nights soaking up the heat from the woodstove downstairs.  So, rarely does she ascend the staircase and interrupt our sleep.  Unless…

Unless what?  Why of course unless she wants something from us.  Food!  Like, “Get up people and feed me!  What is wrong with you?”  Or, if the woodstove dies down and she no longer feels warm, she might interrupt our sleep to “borrow” some heat from us.  It doesn’t really matter if we’re busy sleeping.  After all, we do exist for her.  Or so she thinks.

Interestingly, I don’t recall a time that Lucy made her way into our schedule just for the sake of telling us how wonderful we are.  Or, how thankful she is that we feed her and take care of her.  And, certainly not to express her gratitude for paying her “cost of living” expenses.

Alrighty then, what’s the point?  How many times do we approach the throne of grace when we want something?  When we’re out of something?  When things don’t suit us?  When we’re in need?  And rightly so.  God bids us come.  We are, after all, the created and He, the Creator.  We are completely dependent upon our loving Father.

Two concerns.  One: are those the only times that we acknowledge the presence of our God?  Do we tend to ignore Him when we are warm and full?  Is He conspicuously absent from our thoughts in between feedings?  Two: do we ever approach the throne of grace just to gaze?  You know, just to marvel at our Father?  Heaven (Revelation 4-5) seems to accommodate an uninterrupted gaze at the One who is seated on the throne.

He, alone, is worthy.  God knows that He is worthy.  He made us to know that He is worthy.  He created us with just such a capacity.  (I don’t think Lucy has that capacity.)  We thrive when we know that He is worthy and when we acknowledge that He is worthy.  That’s how He made us.  And, it pleases our Father to hear it from us.  Wow!

What do you say?  How about we pull up a seat and just gaze for a few minutes today at the One seated on the throne.  And, after a good gaze, tell your Father just how great He is!

Gazing, at least for a moment,
