Indispensable!

Devotional10.5.22

Dear Faith Family,

But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, (1 Corinthians 12:24).

They exist in over twenty different varieties.  By 2025 it is predicted that the global industry will be worth some 15,900 million dollars.  You can trace their history back to the 17th century in Turkey (I know, John wrote about them).  They even have their own National Day of Recognition, May 25th, (everplush.com).

Have you figured out what they are?  Of course not (ok, maybe you googled it!).  Why not?  Because they get little attention in your home (you probably have fifty or more of them) and even less respect.  Ok, sometimes the one’s in the kitchen get noticed.  And the ones we take to the beach may draw attention but only a few times (or less) a year.

By in large, towels are neglected, right?  But what would happen if we removed all the towels from your house?!  No bath towels.  No kitchen towels.  No beach/pool towels.  No face towels.  No “garage” towels.  And no towels for your pets.

Now you get it.  Towels, mundane and overlooked, are essential.  Every day.  Isn’t that the point of 1 Corinthians 12:24?  God has so constructed His body, the Church, with a variety of different parts.  Some of those parts gain the attention of the rest of the body.  Other parts are often overlooked, taken for granted.

How does God view those overlooked parts?  Indispensable!

Feeling overlooked, taken for granted, unnecessary?  Maybe your calling and giftedness in the body of Christ feels unimportant?  Maybe you’re coveting the calling and giftedness of another?  May I remind you that you are indispensable?!  You, your calling and giftedness, may feel mundane and unnoticed.  Keep in mind that you are hand-picked, hand-designed, and hand-served for the common good of the body of Christ!  Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven, (Matthew 5:16).

Sure, a new shiny car gets a lot of attention.  But give it a week of rain and road grime.  It may still get attention – like when someone writes “wash me” in the grime!  So, go ahead, run it through the car wash.  And don’t forget the last stop – you know, the bin with all the towels to finish the job!  That’s right.  Appreciate the towel!

Thankful to be a towel,
Pastor Karl
