Devotional 9.4.25

Dear Faith Family,

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?  And not one of them is forgotten before God.  Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered.  Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows, (Luke 12:6-7).

Another day.  Another project.  Storage tote-rack construction to organize the junk in the garage.  It’s therapy.  As I was finishing up for the day, a hummingbird decided to join the party.  That’s when things proved problematic.  See, the garage door (when open) is about seven feet off the floor.  The ceiling is another five to seven feet above the garage door.

I know that hummingbirds can fly backward and forward.  However, up seems to be their default direction.  Stress (like that produced by giants in the garage) only seems to encourage their default direction.  In other words, out was not happening.

Yes, I tried outside lights (by now it was dark outside).  And a flashlight.  And a hummingbird feeder.  She did drink from the feeder.  But that only gave her more energy to fly in default mode!  So, I tucked her in for the night.  Feeder?  Yes.  Garage door closed for safe keeping?  Yes.  Low light – enough to see the feeder and just right for sleeping ambiance?  Yes.

I was concerned for that little hummingbird!  And then the reality check.  God, you love us more!  More than that hummingbird!  More than we can understand!  But why?

In an attempt to answer that question, we often search in the wrong direction.  We wonder what we’ve done (or not done) that the living God would choose to love us.  Neither.  God doesn’t choose to love us because of our performance!

In this is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins, (1 John 4:10).

God loves us because He is God!

How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,

Pastor Karl
