Devotional 7.3.24

Dear Faith Family,

I have been crucified with Christ.  It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.  And the life I now life in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me, (Galatians 2:20).

It was one of those “super spiritual” stops in my schedule last night.  Apparently, the cat decided that she didn’t like the food that she was being served.  No big deal, right?  Just let her think about it long enough.  She’ll get hungry.  I’m with you.  But before you decide, know that if she doesn’t eat this particular food, we all get to take a field trip to the vet.  Please don’t ask me to explain.

With the list penned in vanishing ink indelibly on my mind, into the store I did go.  This “super spiritual” stop was an errand to get.  Strawberry jam?  Got it.  Juice?  Got it too.  Cat food?  Got it three.  Accidentally on purpose I passed through the clothing section on my way to check out.

And what to my wandering eyes did I see?
On clearance a pair of khakis, for me?
Off to the dressing rooms I did go.
With affordable and comfortable Khakis in tow.
As I tried on the khakis, disappointment set in.
Too short.  Oh well. For sure not a win.

At some point it hit me.  I was on a get errand.  Getting jam, juice, and cat food, (but not khakis).  Was that it?  Was that the only thing?  I was so busy getting that I almost missed it.  This was more than a get errand.  This was a give errand.  No, I’m not talking about giving back the food that our cat didn’t like.

I am talking about the employee who assisted me at the dressing room.  I had the opportunity to give kind words.  I had the opportunity to give appreciation and to say, “thank you”.  I had the opportunity to give a blessing to that hand-crafted in the image of God person.

Got me to thinking.  Is today one big get errand?  Or are we on a give errand?

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son…, (John 3:16).  What a picture of love!  Love isn’t dormant.  Love isn’t a selfie.  Love isn’t on a get errand.  Love gives.  We, in Christ, have been given the gift of life – the opportunity to live out a give errand every day (even when picking up cat food!).  Who do you get to give Jesus to today?

On a give errand,
Pastor Karl
