Dear Faith Family,
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope, (1 Thessalonians 4:13).
Should I cut the red wire or the yellow wire? Or maybe the blue wire? We’ve all watched with elevated blood pressure as our favorite character competes with the clock to diffuse a bomb before it explodes. With a fresh pair of wire cutters (which everyone carries in case of a bomb emergency) the hero vacillates between the colors. When a decision is reached, pressure applied on the green handled cutters to the blue wire renders the unknown.
In fact, what’s to come is completely unknown. Will the bomb explode? Will the timer accelerate? Will the timer stop? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a manual? One that clearly spells things out. If you cut the red wire the bomb will explode. If you cut the yellow wire, the timer will accelerate. Cut the blue wire and you will live happily ever after.
Like some of you, I was taken back by the recent death of Bob Saget. Bob Saget wrote a tribute to Betty White on Instagram days before his own death. In the tribute, Saget contemplated what happens in the afterlife. "I don't know what happens when we die," Saget wrote. (Yahoo.com) Does Bob’s ignorance give rise to concern?
Wouldn’t it be nice to know what happens when we die? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a manual? Wait. What? There is one? Like there’s somewhere that we can find out what really happens when we die?
So, a couple (ok, more than two) of questions to stir your thoughts. Would a manual have changed anything in the last few days of Bob’s life, between Betty White’s death and his own? How would his life have been different if he had the manual? More importantly how would what happens after death been affected?
What about you? Does the manual change anything in the last days of your life, between Bob Saget’s death and your own? How will your life be different since you have the manual? More importantly, how will what happens after death be affected?
And what about the rest of the Bob Saget’s in this world? Are we going to watch them ignorantly cut the wire or will we read them the manual with our lives?
