“Taking Him at His Word”

Dear Faith Family,

And now, O Lord God, You are God, and Your words are true, and You have promised this good thing to Your servant, 2 Samuel 7:28.

The Cambridge dictionary defines the word “reservation” as “an arrangement in which something such as a seat on an aircraft or a table at a restaurant is kept for you.”

Recently a friend of mine attempted to make just such a arrangement.  His attempted arrangement was with a rental car company.  He was informed that he could make a reservation and he was warned that there might be a car kept for him on the day of the reservation or there might not be a car kept for him on the day of the reservation.

So then, I guess it’s not really a reservation?!  Don’t be silly!  He could make a reservation.  It just might not be reserved!  Wait.  Did I miss something?

Here’s the point I’m trying to make:  Either words mean something or they don’t.  So, whether words mean something or not affects us.  When words don’t mean stuff, we, then, are led to insecurity and fear.  On the other hand, when words do mean stuff, we, then, are led to security and trust.

My friend had no confidence in the rental car company.  In fact, he didn’t reserve a car that might have been reserved…or not!  In my lifetime I’ve watched the Word of God mean less and less.  I’ve listened: “Well, the Word of God can be interpreted in so many different ways; well, that verse was written for people way back then; well, God didn’t really mean that; or, that doesn’t really apply to me!”  Yikes!

Wahlah!  Suddenly we’ve concluded that the Word of God doesn’t really mean stuff.  And we wonder why we struggle with insecurity and fear.  We need to know confidently that the Word of God does mean stuff!  Everything God said He has either done or will do.  Period.

Don’t sit in judgement of the Word of God deciding which of His words mean stuff and which of His words do not mean stuff.  Instead, position yourself under the Word of God.  He means what He said.  Be thankful.

Taking Him at His Word,

PS – if God’s Word means stuff shouldn’t our words mean stuff too?
