How Long, O Lord?

Devotional 8.31.22

Dear Faith Family,

How long, O Lord?  Will You forget me forever?  How long will you hide your face from me?  How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day?  How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?, (Psalm 13:1-2).

It’s here!  August 15 did arrive!  I know you’re excited, right?!  At this point you are wondering: “what’s the significance of August 15?  Why it’s the opening day of deer season, of course!  And that means Fridays are for climbing up in a tree stand and waiting.

First Friday?  Nothing.  Nothing but rain.  Well, there was the thing about getting to walk a couple of miles round trip back to the club house to retrieve my cell phone.  So, there was that.  That was not nothing.  That was something.  But not a good something.  Sit in the deer stand, I did.  See deer, I didn’t.

Second Friday.  Rain?  Absent.  Cell phone?  Present.  Deer?  Absent.  Like, nothing!  So how long do I have to wait.  I will continue to sit and wait in hopes that a world record buck will choose to appear.  But how long will that take?

Maybe you’ve felt like you’re waiting?  Waiting on God to answer prayer?  Waiting on God to keep His Word?  Waiting on God to end your waiting?

David waited.  His lament can be found in the 13th Psalm.  What was he waiting for?  He was waiting for God.  At least he knew who he was waiting for.  He recognized that God is the sovereign God of everything, including whatever else David was waiting for.

So, what to do when waiting.  David exercised His faith by rehearsing the steadfast love of the Lord.  How has God demonstrated His steadfast love in the past?  Where, in the Bible, can you read about His steadfast love?  Consider His persistent love for His children in the Old Testament.  How has God demonstrated His steadfast love in your life?

David practiced joy as he recounted the salvation of His God.  Wow!  That’s a mind-full.  He came to earth.  He lived a perfect life subjecting Himself to the cares of this world.  He died in our place as the punishment for our sin.  He rose again from the dead so that we might live!  That’s something to be joyful about!

And, David worshipped in song as he recalled the gracious favor of the Lord.  How many times has God blessed you with a sunset?  A meal?  A friend?  Oh yea, I forgot: sitting in the stand on that first Friday, I did have company.  There was a curious hummingbird that flew right next to me.  He came to remind me of God’s bountiful blessing.

He's worth waiting for,
Pastor Karl
