The Waiting Room

Devotional 7.26.23

Dear Faith Family,

Only remember me, when it is well with you, and please do me the kindness to mention me to Pharaoh, and so get me out of this house. For I was indeed stolen out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also I have done nothing that they should put me into the pit.”, (Genesis 40:14-15).

Have you been here?  Here?  Where is here?  Here is at the doctor’s office.  We entered the front door and sat down waiting for my friend’s medical test.  They called the last name and off we went through a door, right, right, left, right, and finally right.  Along the way our keeper of the keys told us about the waiting room up ahead.  What a great name!  The waiting room.

In my many (not that many) rotations around the sun, I’ve found myself seated in more than one of God’s waiting rooms.  Do you know what I mean?  Ever been here?  You know that sooner or later someone is coming.  Something comes next.  Maybe you’re just not quite sure what that something is.  And, so you wait.

For a few moments I drank in the room.  Nice pictures hid the wall.  A plant held down a decorative pot on the floor.  A television masked the waiting quietly rerunning an episode of Law and Order Special Victims Unit.  Even the TV remote waited on the one love seat pleading for someone to give it the something next.  As I sat in the comfort of a chair, I absorbed the conditioned air on a hot summer day.  Next to me waited a box of tissues.  I wanted to need to blow my nose just to give the tissues their something next!

In that quiet, thoughts collided in my mind.  I think they call that a brainstorm.  (That doesn’t even sound like a good idea!)  Anyway, back to taking a seat in one of God’s waiting rooms.  Often His waiting rooms are not so comfortable.  In fact, the exit sign may be the only visible comfort.

Joseph was in just such a waiting room.  I don’t know that he ever called it God’s waiting room.  He showed the cupbearer his hand when he asked to be remembered that he might exit his one of many waiting rooms.  He wanted out!  And, pronto!  Nothing.  Nothing happened.  In fact, go ahead.  Read ahead.  Genesis 41.  After two whole years!  But who’s counting?!  So Joseph waited in that waiting room for more than two years!

There I sat waiting.  But was I?  The phone, the TV, the pictures, the plant, the tissues.  Oh yeah, there was the spacious bathroom.  All I needed was some food and a pillow!  Checked some things on my phone.  Gave the remote the opportunity to be useful.  Attempted (yeah that was a fail) to brighten the picture on the TV.  Free trip to the restroom (didn’t even need a hall pass!).  Looked at the pictures.  Touched the plant to see if it was real.  It was.  And then it was time to exit.  Wait, did I miss the wait?

Be still and know that He is God,
